Winter 2017 Ducks and Chicks

Ducks take their first swim outside. This is a 20 gallon fish tank.

Just a few of the chickens outside fertilizing our lawn.
Winter 2017- first came the ducks, then came the chicks

When we moved into our new home back up to a golf course I never imagined that I would add poultry. We moved away from the farm mostly to own our own home, but partly to live closer to civilization. I knew I wanted a big enough yard to have a sizable vegetable garden but I thought the days of owning chickens were behind me.
Then my daughter decided she was going to raise ducks for her agricultural science project. And I just couldn't help myself. the baby chickens were too cute. at first i was only going to get two, then chicken math took over. I decided on two breeds, then I noticed the Bantam chickens and thought, what harm could two tiny little birds do. Then the lady at the store asked if I would be willing to adopt an injured Bantam chick that needed special care. 'Why not'. So we left the store that day with two ducks and seven chickens.
I lie. Initially we did leave the store with only two ducks but the urge to go back and get chickens was too great so I returned later that day and came back with seven chickens. And now we have a mini-poultry operation among suburbanite neighbors and backyard golfers that think they new neighbors are crazy.
Maybe we are, at least I am. My poor husband just loves me, and my kids are stuck with me.
